2012 Books I Started But Didn't Finish Challenge

Photobucket

Hosted by: A Room of One's Own

The goal:

  • Commit to finish some or all of the books you began to read in 2011 (or before) and never completed.

Prizes:

  • I will not give away prizes or otherwise motivate people to complete their goals for this challenge.
  • Instead, I encourage you to self-motivate.
  • Keep your list central on your blog (or elsewhere) and commit to buy yourself some sort of reward when you finish the task. (A book? A bookmark? Whatever you know will inspire YOU.)

The rules:

  • Post a list of the books you began reading in 2011 (or at some point in your life) and never finished reading. (Maybe even say why you stopped reading!)
  • You can list as few or as many titles as you intend to complete in 2012. One or twenty or a hundred – it’s YOUR challenge.
  • You can include whatever genres you please in this challenge.
  • It doesn’t matter how you go about finishing these books. You can combine them with any other challenges.
  • You do not need a blog to participate. You can simply list the books you want to finish in the comments below.
  • List the prize you will gift yourself when you complete this challenge in your challenge post (to make it official.)
  • Write yourself a little manifesto about how you intend to approach these left-over books.
  • Commit to finish your list by the end of 2012.
  • You are NOT allowed to stress if it takes longer than 2012 to finish your list! Just commit again in 2013!!
  • Leave a link to your post in the comments below.
My List

North and South: Started this way back in January of last year. I really liked it, but for some reason got distracted by other books and before I knew it had stopped reading. I really want to give it another go this year.

Hamlet: Pretty much the same thing that happened with the book above.  The thing is that once you put Shakespeare down for awhile you can't back into it without starting over.  That's okay. It's a really good play (or at least the half that I read was).  I'm willing to start again.

Anne of Green Gables: I really wanted to re-read this last year, but only read two chapters. This should be no big deal to finish since I already know that I love it.

Tarzan of The Apes (Completed):  Started this on audio book. Then I couldn't sit still and listen for some reason. I guess my ADD kicked in. I loved the few chapters that I got in though.

The Girl Who Played With Fire (Completed): I read one chapter then realized that if I wanted to read 85 books in 6 months this book was probably a few pages too long for my slow reading. I read faster now so I'm set. I really have to read this one since my parents keep wanting to talk about the book or the film but I don't want to be exposed to spoilers.

Books I Started Before 2011

To add on to the challenge I thought I would list a few books I started but never finished in years before.

Fear Nothing: I keep starting this and never getting past the first two chapters. I don't understand why I keep doing this. The beginning of the book is pretty exciting I just need to keep going. I'm actually very frustrated that I haven't finished it.

The Dead Zone: I only read half of this a long long time ago. I think I was in high school. Don't know why I stopped. I think I got distracted by some other book. Every now and then I think about finishing it. I figure there is no time like the new year.

The Bell Jar: It was just one of those moments where you start a book you like it but you realize your just not in the mood for it at the moment. It's not that you won't ever be in the mood for it. Just that you want to wait for the perfect time to read it. I think the time for The Bell Jar is approaching.

My Prize: I'm not sure how to reward myself. Usually the since of accomplishment is enough. However, if I finish Fear Nothing I might reward myself with buying the graphic novel version that I saw in the Nook store.

My Manifesto: Plan to take my time reading these and just enjoy the experience.

What a great challenge! I haven't read The Dead Zone in a while but it's good and the Christopher Walken movie is a nice companion to it. Happy New Year and good luck :)

What a great list! My favorite part of this challenge is seeing everyone's prize and maifesto for completing their goals. I agree: the experience is award enough -- but a little bobbin never hurt, right? I don't know about everyone else, but I'm not in the habit of gifting myself. I'd love to change that. I know what prize would please me. :-D

Cheers!
